6 Apps to Download Before Working Abroad

Moving to another country is exciting, but there are a few things you’ll want to have figured out before you get on that plane. Your phone will probably become your go-to for everything from finding your new apartment to figuring out the subway and paying for your first coffee.

So before you pack your bags, here are some apps worth downloading before you leave Canada.

  1. Airalo

One of the first things you’ll need when you arrive is data. You don’t want to be standing in the airport trying to figure out how to get to your accommodation with no internet.

With an eSIM provider like Airalo, you can purchase a data plan before you leave and get connected as soon as you arrive. It’s especially handy for those first few days while you’re getting settled and figuring out a local SIM card or phone plan.

Tip: Set up your eSIM before your flight so you’re ready to use it when you land.

Working Holiday Canada participants can also get 15% off an Airalo eSIM, helping you stay connected from the moment you arrive, just email info@workingholidaycanada.org to receive the discount code.

2. Wise

Moving abroad means dealing with a new currency, and figuring out the best way to move money between your Canadian and local accounts can take some planning.

Wise is one option to look into for international transfers and exchanging currencies. Before you leave, it’s also worth checking with your Canadian bank to see what fees they charge for international purchases and withdrawals.

3. Google Maps

This one is probably obvious, but Google Maps is going to become your best friend.

You’ll use it to find your workplace, grocery stores, cafés, your new favourite neighbourhood and, of course, figure out how to get from A to B when everything is unfamiliar.

Depending on where you’re going, you may also want to download the local public transit app.

Tip: Download an offline map of your city before you go. You’ll thank yourself later.

4. Google Translate

Going somewhere where you don’t speak the local language? A translation app can make everyday life much easier.

You can use Google Translate to translate menus, signs, messages and conversations. But don’t rely on it for everything! Learning a few basic phrases before you leave will go a long way and can make it easier to connect with people once you arrive.

5. WhatsApp

If you’re used to texting everyone through iMessage, WhatsApp might take some getting used to. But in many countries, it’s one of the main ways people communicate.

You may find yourself using it to message new friends, join group chats, communicate with your accommodation or even stay in touch with people you meet while travelling.

Tip: Download it before you go and make sure your account is set up with your phone number.

Local Apps

This one depends entirely on where you’re going.

Different countries have different apps that people use every day for transportation, food delivery, messaging, housing and even paying for things. Spend a little time researching what locals actually use before you arrive.

You can also join Facebook groups, Reddit communities or other online groups for people living in your destination. They’re often a great place to find recommendations from people who have already done it.
