Program Overview

Languages Canada, a Government of Canada–recognized organization under International Experience Canada (IEC), is accepting applications for the Teach English in Southern France program, offered through our Working Holiday Program.

This is a unique opportunity to work in schools in Southern France, supporting students in developing their English language skills while gaining firsthand international work experience and immersing yourself in French culture.

The program is well suited for recent graduates, university students, aspiring educators, and individuals interested in cultural exchange, language learning, and meaningful work abroad. No French language skills are required to apply.

Program Structure

  • Location: Southern France (Occitanie)
  • Placement period: Approximately October to May, or another agreed period depending on the host school
  • Classroom teaching/support: Approximately 12 hours per week
  • Additional time: Preparation, meetings, student activities, projects, or self-study
  • Role: English Teaching Assistant
  • Supervision: One designated host teacher or school advisor
  • Monthly stipend: Approximately €700–€1,000, depending on placement structure
  • Housing: Not included, but local guidance or connection with housing resources may be available depending on the school
  • Note: The placement structure may vary depending on the host school.

What You Will Do

As a Canadian English Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • support English language learning in a professional and respectful manner
  • assist teachers with classroom and student engagement activities
  • lead or support English conversation practice
  • prepare for assigned activities and presentations
  • share Canadian culture and perspectives with students
  • support cultural exchange and internationalization activities
  • follow school rules, procedures, and expectations
  • communicate regularly with your host teacher or advisor
  • be flexible and open to adapting to the school’s needs
  • complete the agreed placement period responsibly

Eligibility Requirements

Ideal candidates should be:

  • Canadian youth eligible for the France Working Holiday visa
  • native or near-native English speakers
  • currently completing or having completed university-level education
  • interested in teaching, languages, education, French culture, or intercultural exchange
  • motivated, adaptable, and ready to live and work abroad
  • comfortable working with students in a school environment
  • some French language ability

The following are considered assets:

  • previous tutoring, mentoring, teaching, volunteer, or youth work experience
  • experience studying, working, or travelling abroad
  • interest in education, international relations, languages, or global mobility

What’s Included

The program includes:

  • monthly stipend of approximately €700–€1,000
  • application review and screening by Languages Canada
  • placement matching with a host school, if selected
  • pre-departure guidance from Languages Canada
  • support with travel preparation and visa-related guidance
  • supervision by a host teacher or school advisor
  • ongoing communication and support during the placement

What’s Not Included

Applicants should be prepared to cover or arrange:

  • flights to and from France
  • housing, unless local support or a host family option is available
  • meals and personal expenses
  • health/travel insurance
  • visa or permit-related costs
  • local transportation
  • any additional travel or personal activities
